I couldn't put my running shoes on, let along my bike shoes, for, seriously, four weeks. But before that four week period was up, I came down with the most evil case of the flu I have had in years.
At the end of March, I still had the flu symptoms - hacking cough, intense weakness, and continual low-level nausea. So I really don't have a season planned. Right now the only thing I'm definite on is the Seattle Danskin in August. I'll update this page again once I can start training and get a sense of what my rather truncated schedule might be.
May 22, 2007: Well, I did manage to go up to the Chico Wildflower and ride part of the course (a flat 35 miles) with my friend Leslie. We eschewed the official start and official ride because the early morning was pouring with rain, but the weather turned kind by about 9 a.m., and we had a lovely jaunt around the rice paddies and almond orchards south and west of Chico. Next year, I'll do the whole thing.
Still no definitive race schedule for me. I'm toying with the San Jose Mountain Bike Triathlon in late June, but now I've got kind of a stiff knee (this body of mine just isn't cooperating much), and my running is kind of in the terlet. Plus I don't have a mountain bike, though I don't see that as a major obstacle. I'm also ramping my bike mileage again with a view to the Solvang's Finest Century in early November. Not sure if that's truth in advertising because I understand there are a lot of fine century rides around Solvang, but this one looks doable and beautiful. And there are very fine wine-growing areas nearby (see the movie Sideways for more).
September 3, 2007:Hey, I did do a triathlon! Danskin Seattle was a blast -- a very wet blast. And I even have a race report.
I'm also putting a 5k on my schedule for early November - the 5k run/walk of the Silicon Valley Marathon, accompanying my friend Dana on her first 5k.
The big goal for the year is still the Solvang's Finest Century. I've been having another round of health weirdness the last couple weeks, which is affecting my ability to train, but I am determined to do at least the metric century, hills and all.
More soon!
