The Shameless Self-Promotion Section

Updated May 18, 2006

This is the part of the site where I keep y'all up to date on my book signings, media appearances, speaking engagements, and other opportunities for playing the diva in public.

Media Stuff

May 2006: I'm doing an interview for Lime on Sirius satellite radio on May 22. "Healthy Living With a Twist"! Not sure when it'll air but I'll let ya know.

November 2005: Another interview that was fun to do. I kind of feel like I rambled when I read it though. The Alaska Club Fitness Magazine!

July 2005: One of the giants of triathlon journalism, Inside Triathlon, included a very kind review of Slow Fat Triathlete in their July issue. Read it here! (PDF)

June 2005: Actually, it turned out to be the June issue of Shape. Hey, what's a few months between friends? I thought I had a PDF of this bit that I could post for your reading pleasure, but I don't yet.

May 2005: The charmingly named online magazine Failure featured a really fun and in-depth interview that showed up in May. It's still on line at www.failuremag.com in the Archives section, under Sports. If they ever take it offline, let me know and I'll post it myself. Oh, and "Failure"? Here's what they say: "Failure magazine is the online publication full of humankind's boldest missteps." They look at things from a different perspective. It's smart and engaging.

April 2005: The April issue of Shape magazine is devoting at least a few words to Slow Fat Triathlete.

October 16, 2004: On the day of Ironman Hawaii, the NPR program "Only A Game" aired a story on triathlon for the rest of us. I have quite a bit to say on the matter. Go to www.onlyagame.org for the schedule, stations in your area that carry the show, and how to listen to it on the web.

July 22, 2004: The Fairbanks News-Miner mined a nice column out of a long phone interview that we did. Unfortunately, the article's no longer on their website. I'm hoping that the reporter will give me some text so I can post it here.

May 23, 2004: The Toledo Blade published this little feature called "Time For A Change," in which I get to spout off about my long-term perspective on fitness and weight loss.

Like me, you may be thinking, The Toledo Blade? Why, exactly, would you name a newspaper that, unless you wanted to evoke images of Zorro, the Gay Blade? In fact, there are a number of gay-oriented newspapers called the Blade, but the Toledo Blade is not one of them. I quizzed Vanessa Winans, the reporter who interviewed me, and she had to go and do some research. What she found is that the paperˆīs founders felt that the common newspaper names of the day, The Advertiser, The Gazette, etc., were all much of a muchness, and they wanted to stand out. So they picked a name that harked back to Toledo, Spain, and the high-quality swords produced there. Now you know as much as I do.

May 18, 2004: The San Jose Mercury News uses its weekly"How I Stay Fit" columnto talk about how I stay fit. A couple of factual oopses: I do not have "several" marathons to my credit, or even one, and it's not tendinitis that makes it hard for me to climb hills, it's fat. But what the hey.

May 12, 2004: The Oregonian puts the Slow Fat Triathlete on the front page of the Living section. Very nice piece by Abby Haight.

The June issue of Fitness magazine had an article on training for your first tri. It contains one brief but solid reference to me and the book.

Inside Triathlon's June issue features the triathlon body, and there's an interview in there featuring yours truly. I first saw it on April 30 or thereabouts.

April 27, 2004: Bob Laitner, the running writer for the Detroit Free Press, talked about my book as an inspiration to him as he works to come back from knee surgery. That was way cool!

April 4, 2004: Julie Deardorff of the Chicago Tribune wrote about me and the book in her column for the Sunday paper. Check it out at my tri club's web site. Her column was also reprinted in the Stamford Advocate and the Fort Wayne News Sentinel

Oh, and my local paper, the Mountain View Voice did a little feature

June 10, 2006
I'll be speaking to the SJ FIT marathon training group in Los Gatos, California.

Weekend of July 15-16, 2006, Albany, NY
A group of readers is setting up a couple of events over this weekend.
Email me for details if you're going to be in the area.

Weekend of August 19-20, 2006, Seattle, Washington
I'll be doing some things based around the Danskin Seattle triathlon. Always wanted to do a Danskin, and once again a reader has inspired me to make it happen.

Sunday, August 15, 2004
I gave a motivational speech to some 2,400 sales consultants for Cookie Lee Fine Fashion Jewelry! Should you need to hire me to motivate your troops, just drop me an email and we'll work something out.

I'm available to come and speak to your wellness group, triathlon club, bookstore, company gathering, or anywhere else I might be able to amuse and inspire you. I'm based in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I do like traveling, especially if there's a cool triathlon or some fascinating local cuisine involved. Maybe we can work something out!

Drop me an email at jayne(at)slowfattriathlete.com if you think you have a group that needs a talking-to from a large, funny, determined triathlete with a unique perspective on persistence, achieving unlikely goals, and the meaning of success.
